A Little History
The Stanley Hotel has been welcoming guests for more than 175 years.
The Hotel was established by John Whitbread, who arrived in Van Diemen’s Land as a young convict in 1828 before later settling in Stanley and becoming a respected local businessman. Originally known as the Emily Hotel, the building was licensed as a hotel around 1847 and has since been known as the Freemason’s, The Union and, today, the Stanley Hotel.
In A Residence in Tasmania, published in 1856, Butler Stoney described the Emily Hotel as “a good and comfortable hotel” where “every attention is paid to guests.”
More than 170 years later, we are proud to continue that tradition of welcoming visitors to Stanley.
Reception is located at the main entrance on Church Street and is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Open daily from 11:30am, the Stanley Hotel Public Bar is a great place to relax. Enjoy the jukebox, challenge the locals to a game of eight-ball, play a board game, enjoy a meal or settle in beside the cosy fire.
The Bistro and Deck are open daily from 11:30am for drinks.
- Lunch: 12:00 noon–2:00pm
- Snack menu: 2:00pm–5:00pm
- Dinner: From 5:30pm
Bookings are recommended. Reserve your table using the QR code or contact Reception for assistance.
Explore one of the oldest wine cellars on the coast and browse a great selection of wines, beers and spirits.
The Bottle Shop and historic cellar are open daily from 11:30am until late, with access from Church Street.
Check-out time is 10:00am.
Please return your key to Reception. For an early departure, you may leave your key in the key-return box located in the hallway at the Stanley Hotel.
Complimentary off-street parking is available on site.
In an emergency requiring an ambulance, police or the fire brigade, always dial 000.
For other urgent concerns outside Reception hours, please call 0418 367 617.
All guest rooms and accommodation units are strictly smoke-free.
Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Connection details can be found on your welcome sheet or by scanning the QR code provided in your accommodation.
The channels on your television have been pre-set. We kindly ask that you do not retune or change the channel settings.
You are welcome to use the available streaming apps by signing in to your personal account. Please remember to log out before checking out.
A fan is in the wardrobe, and a wall-mounted panel heater is available for warmth.
The hot water is unlimited but does take a long time to come through. Please turn the hot water tap on full, when the water runs hot, adjust with the cold water.
Laundry facilities, including a washing machine, dryer, and washing powder, are located on the first floor and are free to use.
For room servicing, use the “PLEASE MAKE UP MY ROOM” or “DO NOT DISTURB” sign on your door.
